ARTIFICIAL LIMB CENTRE CELEBRATES 75TH RAISING DAY AT PUNE

Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) Pune organised a Continuing Rehabilitation Education (CRE) programme on 11 and 12 May 2019 on the occasion of ‘75thRaising Day of Artificial Limb Centre (ALC) Pune.

 

ALC has been a pioneer rehabilitation institute catering for the needs of the amputees and the other locomotor disabled patients for more than seven decades now. Established at Pune in 1944 to provide artificial limb, appliances and deliver rehabilitative care to the gallant disabled soldiers of the Indian Army. It witnessed re-location to Kirkee in 1945 and then to Lahore in 1946. Post partition the centre was re-established at its present location in Pune in 1948. It is doing yeoman service to the nation by looking after amputees and other locomotor disabled patients from the forces and civil main stream.

 

Lieutenant General Bipin Puri, Param Vishist Seva Medal, Vishist Seva Medal, President Honorary Surgeon (PHS), Director General Armed Forces Medical Service & Senior Colonel Commandant was the Chief Guest for the programme. Ex Commandants and former Director Generals of Medical Services were also present during the event. Officers from Armed Forces Medical College, Command Hospital Southern Command, other military establishments and medical students from various colleges of Pune and Mumbai also attended the programme. First day cover to mark the competition of glorious 75 years was released by the Chief Guest alongwith other dignitaries during the event. A Continuing Rehabilitation Education CD and ALC magazine ‘STRIDE’ in English and ‘KSHITIJ’ in Hindi were also released during the function. Lieutenant General Bipin Puri also felicitated the ex Commandants, Former Director Generals of Medical Services & other dignitaries during the event. He also inaugurated an exhibition wherein various prosthetics/ equipment in rehabilitation field were on display.

 

Stalwarts and eminent practitioners of Rehabilitation Medicine and other allied specialties involved with the amputee rehabilitation like Surgery, Orthopedics, Plastic Surgery, Psychiatry and Dermatology are also participating in the event. The eminent speakers include luminaries in the field of rehabilitation medicine like Major General SK Jain (Retired), Dr SL Yadav from All India Institute of Medical Science (AIIMS) New Delhi, Dr Subodh Kumar, Deputy Director Rehabilitation Council of India (RCI) New Delhi, Dr Mrinal Joshi from Rehabilitation Research Centre, SMS Medical College, Jaipur, Dr VTK Titus, Orthopaedic Surgeon from CMC Vellore to name a few.

 

Amputee rehabilitation involves a multi-pronged approach to address the surgical, physical, psychological, familial, social and occupational issues; all targeted to enable the disabled to attain a productive and socially useful life. Being a technically intensive and nascent field, there is always a continuous evolution in it. The Continuing Rehabilitation Education-2019 programme has provided an opportunity for experts and practitioners of multiple medical disciplines concerned with amputee rehabilitation to come together for deliberations and sharing of best practices in this unique field.
