Arunachal’s Pride: IISER Pune’s Bugun Tribe Project Stands Out at Republic Day Parade

Pune, 29th January 2024: In a vibrant display of cultural heritage and environmental stewardship, the Arunachal Pradesh state tableau took centre stage during the Republic Day Parade, commemorating India’s 75th Republic Day. The tableau spotlighted the biodiversity conservation endeavours of the Bugun tribe, highlighting their dedication to preserving the region’s natural treasures.

Initiated by Dr. Ramana Athreya, a faculty member at the Indian Institutes of Science Education and Research (IISER), Pune, in 2003, the project showcased the remarkable conservation efforts aimed at safeguarding the unique ecosystem inhabited by the Bugun tribe. Dr Athreya’s collaboration with Mr Indiglow culminated in the inception of the Ibubgun tribe project, focusing on protecting their indigenous habitat and its emblematic species.

Speaking about the project, Dr. Ramana Athreya emphasized the significance of preserving the Bugun liocichla, a bird species discovered and named after the tribe. This avian symbolizes the essence of the conservation program, serving as a poignant reminder of the delicate balance between human communities and their natural surroundings.

The Bugun liocichla, found exclusively in a specific area within Arunachal Pradesh, holds a special place in the hearts of the Bugun tribe, symbolizing their connection to the land they call home. Since its inception nearly two decades ago, the conservation project has remained steadfast in its mission to protect the habitat and biodiversity cherished by the indigenous community.

Displayed prominently during the Republic Day celebrations, the Arunachal Pradesh state tableau served as a visual testament to the Bugun tribe’s unwavering commitment to environmental conservation. As spectators marvelled at the intricate details of the tableau, they were reminded of the invaluable role played by indigenous communities in safeguarding our planet’s ecological heritage.
