“Ata Baas” Street Play on Harassment and Violence Against Women Earns Widespread Praise; Highlights the Reality of Being a Woman
Pune, 16th September 2024: In light of the rising incidents of violence against women, a street play titled “Ata Baas” is currently being performed on Bajirao Road during Ganeshotsav.
The play focuses on the harassment women face, societal expectations, and the constant scrutiny that comes with being a ‘woman.’ It vividly portrays the experiences of both a middle-aged woman and a newly employed girl, offering a powerful commentary on the challenges faced by women in the same society.
“Ata Baas” addresses the systemic inequality between men and women, depicting patriarchal norms and expectations, which are suggested to be at the root of the growing violence against women. The play has sparked conversations online, prompting both men and women to reflect on the harsh realities women endure and encouraging them to share their experiences.
After the performance, the audience takes a pledge to treat women with dignity and respect, to speak out against violence, and to never remain silent or tolerate abuse. The pledge also calls upon citizens to raise their voices if they witness women being molested or oppressed.
In addition to the play, interactive games promoting gender equality are being organized at the same venue, engaging citizens in meaningful discussions about the importance of equal treatment for all.
