Kolkata, 9 April, 2024: A policeman was gravely injured on Tuesday in a concerning incident involving an unidentified group of attackers attacking a police camp in Sandeshkhali, North 24 Parganas district, West Bengal. Sandip Saha, the police constable who suffered an injury, is presently receiving treatment at a nearby hospital; his condition has been reported to be ‘very serious’.

Saha’s status is currently critical, as per officials, as he suffered significant head injuries during the incident. Three people identified as Trinamool Congress leaders were earlier detained on suspicion of beating Saha at the Sitalkuchi police camp. These people were taken into custody while the police opened an inquiry into the situation.

Some of the other police officers at the camp were also physically attacked, though not as severely as Saha. They did not, however, suffer any severe injuries. According to initial investigations, Saha may have had a run-in with these three people a few weeks prior to the attack.

The reason for the attack is still being investigated, and the three arrested officers as well as other police officers stationed at the camp are being questioned by the authorities. This incident occurs in the midst of continuous hostilities in Sandeshkhali stemming from claims made by local leaders of the ruling Trinamool Congress party of sexual harassment of women and land grabs.

Recent events in Sandeshkhali have attracted a lot of attention, especially after Enforcement Directorate (ED) officials suspended Trinamool Congress politician Shahjahan Sheikh’s residence in connection to a ration distribution scam.
