Balewadi: Drunk retired Police Inspector Hits People With His Car, 5 Injured, 1 Dead

Pune, September 6, 2020: In a major accident, one person died while five others sustained grievous injuries after a car driven by a retired Police Inspector, who was reportedly under influence of alcohol, rammed into vehicles near Mamta Chowk in Balewadi today.
The deceased has been identified as Santosh Rathod (35), a resident of Kalewadi. The injured persons are Rajesh Singh (37) of Tathawade, Anand Bhandwalkar (35) of Baner and Dashrath Mane of Baner. One person sustained minor injuries. Chatushrungi police have registered FIR in the case, and arrested the car driver Sanjay Nikam.
According to police, Nikam was travelling in his car (MH14 HS 7699) from High Street in Balewadi at around 1 pm. Nikam lost control of his speeding car and hit a two-wheeler coming from the opposite direction. The bike got stuck in the car which dragged it for about 100 metres. After that, the speeding car entered the puncture shop and injured three people and hit a tempo parked nearby. One civilian died on the spot in the accident. Another was seriously injured, while three others were injured.
After this incident, the citizens caught hold of Nikam and beat him severely. Also, locals rushed the injured to a private hospital. As soon as they got information about this incident, the officials of the Chatushrungi police rushed to the spot.
Assistant Police Inspector Sameer Chavan, Police Sub-Inspector Mohan Jadhav, Datta Shinde and Police Naik Bangude rescued Nikam from the clutches of the people, and took him into custody.
