Mumbai, January 22, 2021: The players can be auctioned on 18 February for the 2021 season of the Indian Premier League (IPL). A BCCI official said the auction could be held on February 18. There is still a decision to be made regarding the same. The BCCI is yet to decide whether the next IPL will be held in India or not. Board President Sourav Ganguly, however, has repeatedly stressed that every effort will be made to organize it on the home ground. The IPL was held in the United Arab Emirates in 2020 due to the coronavirus epidemic.

The smooth conduct of the series to be played against England from next month will pave the way for this lucrative league to be held in India. The last date for retention of players was 20 January, while the trading window (transfer of players from one team to another team) will continue till 4 February. Players released from the teams include legends like Steve Smith of Australia (Rajasthan Royals), Glenn Maxwell (Kings XI Punjab), and Lasith Malinga of Sri Lanka.

This time the players’ auction program will be held for 1 day, which will continue till late evening. Earlier BCCI had plans to field 10 teams this season, but at present, it has postponed its plan till 2022. Only 8 teams will participate in this season. In the final match of IPL 2020, defending champion Mumbai Indians defeated Delhi Capitals to claim the title for the fifth time. After Mumbai, Chennai Super Kings have received the most trophies in the league, having won three times.
