BJP MLA Mohan Singh Bisht Proposes Renaming Mustafabad to ‘Shiv Puri’ or ‘Shiv Vihar’

New Delhi, 10th February 2025: Senior Delhi BJP leader and newly-elected MLA from Mustafabad, Mohan Singh Bisht, announced on Sunday his intention to rename his constituency to “Shiv Puri” or “Shiv Vihar” once he officially assumes office.
Bisht secured a landslide victory in the Delhi Assembly elections, defeating AAP candidate Adeel Ahmad by over 17,500 votes in Mustafabad, a constituency with a significant Muslim population.
“I will ensure the name of the area is changed from Mustafabad to Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar. I have expressed this stance before. I don’t understand why political parties insist on keeping the name Mustafabad. Why can’t an area largely inhabited by Hindus be named Shiv Puri or Shiv Vihar? Many residents are uncomfortable with the name ‘Mustafa,’ and it must be changed. I will see to it,” Bisht stated.
Mustafabad, situated in North-East Delhi, was one of the worst-hit areas during the 2020 communal riots in the national capital.
A four-time BJP MLA from Karawal Nagar, also in North-East Delhi, Bisht was replaced by Kapil Mishra as the party’s candidate for the 2025 elections. Instead, the BJP fielded Bisht from Mustafabad.
Initially displeased with the decision, Bisht had previously declared that he would not contest from any constituency other than Karawal Nagar and even expressed his intent to file his nomination for that seat.
“The BJP assumes they can field anyone and win, but that’s a big mistake. Time will tell what happens in the Burari, Karawal Nagar, Ghonda, Seelampur, Gokalpuri, and Nand Nagri constituencies. I will not run from any other seat. I will submit my nomination for Karawal Nagar before January 17,” he had said earlier.
Bisht first won the Karawal Nagar seat in 1998 and successfully held onto it for three consecutive terms. However, he faced defeat in 2015 against then-AAP leader Kapil Mishra. In the 2020 elections, he regained the seat by defeating AAP’s Durgesh Pathak.
