Bopdev Ghat Gang Rape Case: Absconding Accused Suraj Gosavi Remanded To Police Custody After Over Six-Month Manhunt

Pune, 28th April 2025: Suraj Gosavi, an accused in the Bopdev Ghat gang rape case, was remanded to five days of police custody by a local court on Sunday (27th April). Gosavi, who had been absconding for over 6.5 months, was arrested by Walchandnagar police from the Akluj ST stand area on Saturday (26th April) afternoon.
Police informed the court that Gosavi’s physical examination would be conducted, and his blood, nail, and hair samples would be collected for DNA testing. Investigators are also probing whether Gosavi received any assistance or shelter during his time on the run.
The incident took place on 3rd October 2024, when a college student and her friend had gone to the Table Point area at Bopdev Ghat. According to police, Gosavi, along with Chandrashekhar Raviprasad Kanojia (20) and Akhtar Ali Sheikh (28), allegedly assaulted the duo, threatened them with a Koyta, robbed them, and subsequently gang-raped the young woman.
Following the incident, the Pune Police Crime Branch arrested Sheikh and Kanojia, while Gosavi managed to escape. A sustained search operation was launched, leading to his eventual arrest on Saturday.
During Sunday’s court hearing, Special Public Prosecutor Priyanka Vengurlekar sought Gosavi’s police custody, stating that the weapon used in the crime, the stolen jewelry, and the clothes worn during the assault needed to be recovered. She also emphasized the need for Gosavi’s medical examination.
The court granted police custody of Gosavi till 2nd May. Meanwhile, the Crime Branch has already filed a 500-page chargesheet against Sheikh and Kanojia, detailing the recovery of the stolen gold chain, the weapons used to threaten the victims, and other crucial evidence.
