The teams from the Pune fire brigade and National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) managed to pull him out alive after 31 hours around 8 pm on Sunday. However the boy died on his way to Sassoon government hospital, Pune, around 9 pm.

Sunil is son of a labourer. He fell into the borewell while playing around 1 pm on Saturday. He was stuck at 20 feet.

About 50 personnel from Pune rural police, NDRF and Fire brigade were engaged in the operation to rescue the child.

NDRF’s deputy Commandant Sacchidanand Gawade said, “Sunil was taken to a nearby private hospital in an unconscious state but his pulse was running. From there he was being rushed to Sassoon hospital. However his condition deteriorated and he died on the way to Sassoon hospital.”

The rescue team had earlier dug a parallel hole to the borewell. “We faced a lot of difficulty as a solid rock was found which delayed the digging process. After digging 22 feet vertical, we dug horizontally to rescue the boy and managed to pull him out. His upper body was trapped against a rock,” Gawde added.

Doctors had pumped oxygen inside the borewell so that Sunil did not face difficulty while breathing.
