Pune, 4th September 2023: Like every year, people are gearing up to celebrate the festival of Krishna Janmashtami with great enthusiasm across the country. In the state, Govinda squads have already started their preparations, including rigorous practice sessions. In recent years, both men and women’s teams have actively participated in various cities, and this year, third parties will also join the festivities.

In Pune city and Pimpri Chinchwad, four teams of 100 members each, including transgenders, have been formed and have commenced thorough practice sessions. Each team will comprise 25 transgender members. The Dahi Handi ceremony is scheduled to take place on September 7 at around 6 pm at the Gogte Prashala ground in Narayan Peth, Pune.

This special Dahi Handi event for transgenders has been organized by Deepak Mankar, trustee of ‘Deepstambh’ and city president of the Nationalist Congress Party (NCP), along with social workers Sharvari Gawande and Shiv Pratap Sanstha.

Mankar, while speaking about the initiative, emphasized that every member of society, including transgender, has the right to live with dignity and respect. He praised the active participation of transgenders in various fields and emphasized the need for society to embrace them as family members. This year marks the first time a Govinda team comprising transgenders will be participating, and it has received a positive response from about 100 transgender members who are now eager to break the Dahi Handi on September 7. This initiative aims to send a powerful message to society.

A transgender, Kadambari, speaking at the event, highlighted the positive change in society’s perception of transgender individuals in recent months. She expressed gratitude for the respectful treatment transgender members have been receiving, including being appointed as security guards by Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporations. This inclusion in mainstream activities has encouraged transgender individuals to participate in events like the Govinda teams.

Social activist Sharwari Gawande stressed the importance of initiatives like forming a Govinda Team of transgender members to mainstream them in Pune and Pimpri Chinchwad cities. She mentioned that this endeavor has received a positive response, and special training has been provided to all participants. The Dahi Handi event is also expected to gain recognition in the India Book of Records.
