Pune 4th Sept 2023: To protest against the police action against the Maratha community members demanding reservation in Jalna district, the citizens of the community in Khed taluka had called a Bandh. The Bandh received a good response in the majority of villages as people chose to keep their businesses closed to support the protest.

However, the protests set tyres on fire at Alandi-Markal road earlier today and disrupted the traffic movement. The local police intervened and opened the road for vehicular movement later. The Bandh was supported by adjoining areas including villages in the Maval taluka where businessmen kept their shops closed.

It may be noted that the members of Maratha community were lathicharged by police in Jalna district. The videos of brutal lathicharge on protestors including women went viral on social media which later sparked violence in multiple districts. The protestors set MSRTC vehicles and other government vehicles on fire while protesting against the police department. The protest later spread in other districts of the state and the members of the community called for Bandh to support the protestors. Meanwhile the state government decided to send the Superintendent of Police of Jalna on forced leave and two other officers including Additional Superintendent and Deputy Superintendent were transferred.
