Pune, 3rd June 2023: A peculiar incident unfolded last Wednesday night when an individual masquerading as a valet parking attendant at a wedding in Ambegaon, along the Katraj-Dehu Road bypass, made off with a guest’s car.

The victim, a 53-year-old resident of Handewadi Road in Hadapsar, promptly reported the theft to the Bharati Vidyapeeth police on Thursday. As per the police, the man is employed by the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC).

Assistant Inspector Samir Kadam, from the Bharati Vidyapeeth police station, shed light on the incident. The victim, accompanied by his wife and son, was attending his nephew’s wedding. Due to ongoing construction work on the service road, the guest attempted to park his vehicle near the hall’s entrance.

Providing insights from the police complaint, Kadam stated, “A young man, approximately 25 years old, approached the guest and offered valet parking services within the hall’s premises. He assured the guest that he would park the car and hand over the keys to the security guard stationed at the entrance.”

Placing his trust in the supposed valet, the PMC employee handed over his car keys and proceeded into the venue. After waiting for over five minutes without witnessing his car being parked, suspicion crept in. The victim borrowed a relative’s motorcycle and scoured the area up to Katraj Chowk in search of his vehicle, but to no avail.

The poorly lit venue may have facilitated the crime, and the hall manager informed the police that the CCTV cameras were rendered inoperable due to damage to the wiring caused by the road work.

Although the police have managed to acquire footage from a camera at another wedding hall, the images captured are unfortunately indistinct, according to Kadam.
