CBSE Announces Major Overhaul: 2026 Board Exams to Emphasise Skills, Not Memorisation
New Delhi, 29th November 2025: The Central Board of Secondary Education (CBSE) has introduced a landmark shift in the assessment structure for the 2026 Class 10 and Class 12 board examinations, signalling a move away from rote learning toward deeper comprehension and critical thinking. The reforms mark one of the most significant changes to India’s school evaluation system in recent years.
Competency-Based Questions to Dominate Exams
Aligned with the National Education Policy (NEP) 2020, the new pattern prioritises real-world application of knowledge over recall. Beginning with the 2026 cycle:
50% of questions will be competency-based—such as case studies, MCQs, data interpretation, source-based analysis, and scenario-based tasks.
20% will include select-response formats like MCQs.
30% will continue as descriptive, long- and short-answer questions.
This structural shift ensures that half of every paper tests higher-order skills such as reasoning, interpretation, and conceptual clarity.
Two Board Exams a Year for Class 10
CBSE will also roll out a twice-yearly board examination system for Class 10 from 2026. The dual-exam format is designed to ease student stress, provide flexibility, and allow candidates to improve their performance within the same academic year.
Exam Timeline for 2026
The updated format will be implemented in the board exams commencing on February 1, 2026. The opening-day subjects include:
Class 10: Mathematics Standard and Mathematics Basic
Class 12: Biotechnology, Entrepreneurship, and Shorthand (English & Hindi)
The schedule concludes on March 10 for Class 10 and April 9 for Class 12.
Why the Change Matters
CBSE states that the revamped structure is intended to foster:
-Stronger conceptual grounding
-Improved problem-solving and analytical abilities
-Reduced academic pressure
-Better alignment with global evaluation standards
With these changes, CBSE aims to guide students toward a more meaningful, skill-oriented learning process—marking a transformative moment for India’s education landscape.
