Central Railway to focus on “Collection of Plastic Waste”

16 Sep 2019, Pune : Indian Railways is observing Swachhata hi Seva from 11.9.2019 to 2.10.2019 with a view to ensure visible and tangible improvement in cleanliness at all its premises i.e. stations, trains, offices, colonies, workshops, maintenance depots, hospitals, etc. Special attention is being given to clean track approaches to major railway stations, solid waste management including ban of plastic and water use efficiency. Central Railway will also vigorously undertake anti-littering and imposition of penalty under “polluter pays” principle with active participation of railway staff along with NGOs, Charitable Institutions, Passengers and Public at large for their voluntary physical contribution towards Swachhta hi Seva.

Gupta, General Manager, Central Railway while exhorting the Principal Heads of Departments and Divisional Railway Managers has said this would create a healthy environment for us to celebrate 2.10.2019 “the 150 years of Mahatma Gandhi” with highest cleanliness standard of all our stations, trains, colonies, hospitals and health units, etc. 17.9.2019 will be focussed on “Collection of plastic waste” all over Indian Railways. Shramdaan will also be carried out at every station with participation from all railway employees, their families, union representatives, railway pensioners, and all other stakeholders and self-help groups. Awareness campaigns for creating an impact against plastic; vendors to be educated not to use plastic due to single use plastic ban in force in Maharashtra; replacements/substitutes for plastic items to be displayed and distribution of cloth bags, etc. are being done to create awareness. Apart from cleanliness, collection of plastic from all railway premises with particular attention to be given to approaches to stations.

 

As a part of this, Central Railway has developed nurseries at Pandharpur, Sainagar Shirdi, Dudhani, Wadi, Manmad and Daund. About 10 more Nurseries will be added on Mumbai, Bhusaval, Pune and Nagpur divisions in this month under Swachhata Pakhawada activity. Central Railway had planted more than five lakh saplings till August 19 jointly with state forest dept. On 11/9/2019 Swachhata hi Seva day about 21,850 people from railway, passengers, NGO, schools, etc. participated, rallies were organised and plastic ban oath was administered.
