Pune, 11th February 2022: Based on a tip-off, officers of the Air Intelligence Unit of Pune Customs arrested a passenger attempting to smuggle 705 grams of gold bars and pieces by concealing them in his shoes. The incident occurred on Monday, 7th February 2022.

Officials said that the passenger told them that he had travelled from Dubai to Ahmedabad through an international flight, concealed the gold in the aircraft, and then retrieved it when he travelled from Ahmedabad to Pune in the same aircraft. The passenger was arrested under the provisions of the Customs Act for his attempt to smuggle gold into the country.

This case is the latest in a series of smuggling cases detected by Pune Customs officers since international flights commenced earlier this year. In December, the officers seized 800 gms of umit24 carat gold from 2 passengers travelling from Chennai to Pune on the basis of specific intelligence.

The passengers boarded the flight from Chennai and retrieved 6 gold chains and 1 bracelet of foreign origin valued at Rs 40.36 lakhs which was concealed below the seat by another passenger on the international leg of the flight.  However, their attempt was foiled by the officers who unearthed their modus operandi.

On 08.02.2022, the Customs officers at Pune Airport also seized about Rs six lakhs of illegally acquired foreign currency that a passenger attempted to smuggle from Pune to Sharjah.
