Pimpri, 11th January 2024: Pimpri-Chinchwad, the city has catapulted to the 13th position in the nation and secured the 3rd spot in Maharashtra in the central government’s clean survey. This remarkable ascent from the 19th rank in the previous two years is attributed to the concerted efforts and initiatives undertaken to enhance cleanliness in the city.

Union Minister of Urban Development of India Hardeep Singh Puri presided over the award ceremony in Delhi, where Commissioner and Administrator Shekhar Singh, Assistant Commissioner of the Health Department Yashwant Dange, and Associate City Engineer of the Environment Department Sanjay Kulkarni proudly accepted the accolade on behalf of PCMC.

The Swachh Survekshan Abhiyan, initiated by the central government in 2016, aimed at assessing and promoting cleanliness across Indian cities. Subsequent years witnessed fluctuating ranks until the recent surge to 13th in the country and the 3rd position in the state.

PCMC implemented a multifaceted approach to elevate cleanliness standards, including public awareness campaigns, the establishment of public toilets for women, waste classification initiatives, and the Phlegethon campaign for garbage collection. The city also appointed a Green Marshal team to enforce actions against littering and spitting on public roads.

PCMC Commissioner and Administrator, Shekhar Singh, expressed his joy, stating, “For the first time, the city has received the five-star rating in the Garbage Free City and the highest Water Plus Award for the Pollution Free City. Various initiatives have been implemented by the Health Department since last year to improve the ranking in the Central Government Cleanliness Survey. Also, the city dwellers have cooperated a lot.
