Cold Wave Subsides in Pune; Light Rains Predicted from December 26

Pune, 23rd December 2024: The intense cold wave that gripped Pune city and its surrounding areas over the past week has eased, with minimum temperatures beginning to rise. However, a western disturbance is expected to bring light rains from December 26, according to the India Meteorological Department (IMD).
Last week, cold winds from the north caused a significant drop in temperatures, with the mercury plunging to 6°C at the National Defence Academy (NDA) and 7°C at Shivajinagar. These were among the lowest recorded temperatures of this winter season. The chilly weather resulted in a distinctly cold atmosphere during the day.
On Sunday, minimum temperatures showed a noticeable increase, with readings of 19.2°C at Vadgaon Sheri, 19.1°C at Magarpatta, 18.5°C at Koregaon Park, 18.3°C at Dapodi, 15.5°C at Shivajinagar, and 15.3°C at the NDA. Dense fog was also observed across parts of the city and its outskirts due to evaporative winds on Saturday.
Senior Meteorologist Anupam Kashyapi attributed the temperature rise to a low-pressure area formed in the Bay of Bengal, which has mitigated the cold conditions. “The western disturbance is likely to result in partly cloudy skies from December 25, with very light to light rain expected from December 26 to 28,” Kashyapi said.
He added that cloudy weather could lower daytime temperatures, and strong winds may lead to a hail-like chill in the air.
