Lohegaon, 17th June 2023: Approximately Rs 350 Crores are being invested in extending the runway at Pune airport, while construction on an alternative road is scheduled to commence in July. Once the alternative road is completed, the current road will be closed.

Efforts are underway to facilitate the launch of international flight services from Pune airport, prompting the Air Force to expand the runways to meet the necessary requirements.

Extensive work is being carried out for the alternative road, including frequent meetings between senior officials from the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) and the Air Force, site inspections, and surveys. On Thursday, a meeting was held with Air Force officers in the presence of Municipal Commissioner Vikram Kumar and Additional Commissioner Vikas Dhakne.

Earlier in the week, Air Force officials conducted a site inspection, while municipal officials surveyed the location for the alternative road on Friday. A proposal for the construction of the alternative road will be prepared and submitted to the Ministry of Defence for approval.

Construction of the alternative road is expected to begin in July once permission is granted by the Ministry of Defence. Prior to that, the Air Force will invest three and a half crore rupees in extending the runway. The increased runway length will facilitate the landing of international flights. Consequently, the municipality and the Air Force are working together to extend the runway at the airport.

“By extending the airport runway, Pune will be able to accommodate larger aircraft. The Air Force is investing the amount for extending the runway. PMC will start building the alternative road from Pune airport to Lohegaon in July after getting necessary approvals,” said Vikram Kumar, Municipal Commissioner.

The alternative road will be 20 meters in width, larger than the existing road, and will alleviate travel inconveniences for residents commuting to and from Lohegaon.

Furthermore, work on the “missing link road” connecting Viman Nagar to the airport will commence on June 25. This project aims to ease traffic congestion for passengers traveling along this route. The defence ministry has approved the allocation of land from the Viman Nagar exit gate to the airport for this purpose, amounting to 22 Gunthas of land. The construction of this 100-meter road is expected to be completed within 15 to 20 days, informed the Commissioner.
