Pune: CBI Court Rejects Bail Application Of IAS Dr Anil Ramod In Bribery Case

Pune, 16th June 2023: A special CBI court rejected the bail application of Dr. Anil Ramod, Additional Divisional Commissioner, on Friday (16th June). Special Judge A. S. Waghmare issued the order.
Dr Ramod, who holds the position of Additional Divisional Commissioner in the Revenue Department, was arrested on June 9 by the Anti-Corruption Branch of the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI). The arrest was made in connection with allegations of accepting a bribe of eight lakh rupees. Following his arrest, Dr Ramod was initially remanded in CBI custody for three days. Later, he was placed under judicial custody until June 27 by Special Judge Waghmare. Currently, he is being held at Yerwada Jail.
On Wednesday (14th), Dr Ramod’s advocate Sudhir Shah filed a bail application on his behalf. The defence counsel made a plea for bail, which was opposed by CBI counsel Abhayraj Arikar.
Arikar argued that the crime committed by Dr Ramod is serious, given his high-ranking position. Granting bail could hinder the gathering of evidence, and there is a risk of exerting pressure on witnesses and even tampering with or destroying evidence. The search of Dr. Ramod’s house led to the seizure of a significant amount of cash, including 6 crore 64 lakh rupees, and documents from his office are yet to be recovered.
Moreover, it was revealed that the accused and his family members possess various immovable properties valued at Rs 5 crore 30 lakhs. Considering these circumstances, there is a legitimate concern that granting bail could lead to the tampering or destruction of important documents. Therefore, Arikar requested the rejection of the bail application, an argument that Special Judge A. S. Waghmare accepted. As a result, Dr. Ramod’s bail application was denied.
