Cyclone Nisarg: High alert in hilly areas of Pune district

Pune, June 3, 2020: On the backdrop of Cyclone Nisarg, a high alert has been sounded in hilly areas of Pune district in Ambegaon, Junnar, Maval, Bhor, Velhe and Mulshi taluka. The administration is ready with evacuation plans if required in these areas. People have been asked not to go out of homes, said Pune District Collector Naval Kishore Ram.

Pune Zilla Parishad CEO Ayush Prasad said that the IMD has warned of rains and winds in seven taluka of Pune district. “We have advised people to move to safer places. Our teams are ready for patrol. JCB machines, wood cutters, other equipments have been kept on standby”, he said.

Special precautions are being taken in Pune district against the backdrop of the cyclone and heavy rains. Citizens of Junnar and Ambegaon talukas have been appealed to stay safe at home on June 3 and 4 and not to leave the house if possible. The disaster management room will be open round the clock in the tehsil office of Velhe taluka. An emergency meeting of the Disaster Management Committee was held at the Panchayat Samiti Hall at Bhor on Tuesday.

Junnar: Assistant District Collector Jitendra Dudi has appealed to the citizens of Junnar and Ambegaon talukas to stay safe at home on June 3 and 4 and not to leave their homes if possible. Both Junnar and Ambegaon talukas are coming under the cyclone alert area. Therefore, a joint meeting of the officials of both the talukas was held yesterday regarding the measures to be taken for disaster management. Considering the possibility of landslides and floods, the concerned officials at the taluka level have to take special precautions. He advised the citizens to stay safe at home on June 3 and 4 and not to leave the house as much as possible.

Meanwhile, the sky has been cloudy for the last two days, creating rainy weather. There has been heavy and sparse rain in some places. Farmers are rushing to keep their onions and other farms produce safe. Awareness messages are also being spread on social media.

Velhe: Instructions have been given to shift people living in kutcha houses, tin sheds to temples, school buildings, anganwadis etc. In many places, trees, power lines, are likely to collapse. Therefore, citizens need to be careful. All government employees have been asked to remain in their respective villages to create awareness among people.  

Two ambulances have been provided at Panshet and Velhe for health facilities. In case of falling of trees on the road, JCB, tractor and wood cutter machines have been provided. Sarpanch, Police Patil, Gramsevak, Talathi will instruct the citizens to move to safer places if necessary. Bhor: In Bhor taluka, officials are vigilant to prevent damage due to strong winds and heavy rains, said Sub Divisional Officer (Bhor) Rajendra Kumar Jadhav. An emergency meeting of the Disaster Management Committee was held at the Panchayat Samiti Hall at Bhor yesterday. Jadhav said that since the Bhor area is adjacent to the Konkan, there is a possibility of the impact of the cyclone, so a 24-hour disaster management room has been set up in the tehsil office. The administration has prepared a list of villages, buildings, hills and roads which may be in danger zone. Also, a list of JCB operators in the taluka has been prepared for the JCBs required in case of emergency. Heavy rains lashed Pune, Pimpri-Chinchwad 

Environmentalists say this is the result of a cyclone that formed in the Arabian Sea. The city of Pune and Pimpri-Chinchwad witnessed heavy rains from Tuesday evening. The meteorological department had earlier predicted that the effects of the cyclone would be felt in central, western and northern Maharashtra along the west coast. Due to this, it has been cloudy in Pimpri-Chinchwad area including Pune city for the last two days and then there were heavy rains. Meanwhile, power was cut off in some parts of the city. Many low-lying areas were flooded.  More rains are expected today and the next few days. 

 

The government has appealed to the people not to leave their homes in the wake of the cyclone. Meanwhile, heavy rains in the vicinity of Pune city caused inconvenience to many citizens. The IMD Pune has forecast moderate to heavy rains in most parts of the state for the next two days.

Cyclone Nisarg update

The Cyclonic Storm ‘NISARGA’  is very likely to intensify into a Severe Cyclonic Storm. It is very likely to move north-northeastwards and cross north Maharashtra and adjoining south Gujarat coast between Harihareshwar and Daman, close to Alibagh (Raigad District, Maharashtra) during the afternoon of today the 03rd June as a Severe Cyclonic Storm with a maximum sustained wind speed of 100-110 kmph gusting to 120 kmph. The system is now being continuously tracked by the Doppler Weather Radars (DWRs) at Mumbai (Maharashtra) and Goa.

Damage expected due to cyclone Nisarg: Major damage to thatched houses/ huts. Rooftops may blow off. Unattached metal sheets may fly. Damage to power and communication lines. Major damage to Kutcha and some damage to Pucca roads. Flooding of escape routes. Breaking of tree branches, uprooting of large avenue trees. Damage to banana and papaya trees. Large dead limbs blown from trees. Major damage to coastal crops. Damage to embankments/ salt pans.
