Dark Stretch Near Pune Airport Raises Safety Concerns Among Women Commuters

Lohgaon, 18th February 2026: A poorly lit stretch between Pune Airport and Lohgaon Bus Stand is raising safety concerns among commuters, with residents alleging that dysfunctional streetlights along the route have made travel difficult after dark.
The 4 km road near Pune Airport witnesses heavy daily traffic, including two-wheelers, private vehicles and heavy transport. Students, office-goers, local residents and airline passengers frequently use the route, many of whom say visibility drops sharply after 7 pm.
Commuters report that the stretch becomes almost completely dark in several patches, making it hard to spot potholes, uneven surfaces and approaching vehicles. Two-wheeler riders say navigating the road is particularly risky, while pedestrians struggle to walk safely along the roadside.
Women travellers have voiced specific concerns about personal safety. “The road isn’t very long, but the darkness makes it uncomfortable to pass through, especially when you’re alone,” said a college student who uses the route daily.
Another commuter, a working professional, said, “When streetlights don’t work, you constantly feel alert and anxious. Proper lighting is basic safety, not a luxury.”
A resident added, “Even a short walk feels unsafe at night because there’s hardly any visibility.”
Locals also pointed out that stray animals frequently wander onto the road and are at risk of being hit, as drivers cannot see clearly in the dim conditions.
Residents claim that such civic issues often receive attention only after a serious accident occurs. They say that although authorities act eventually, it is usually after a major incident, and preventive steps should be taken instead.
Locals say complaints have been raised but no decisive action has followed so far.
