Delegates from 18 Countries Visit Pune Municipal Corporation to Learn About Waste Management
Pune, 4th May 2023: Representatives from 18 countries in Africa and Asia have visited the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) to inspect the city’s waste management system. The visit was part of a tour organized under India’s Swachh Bharat Mission, which seeks to promote clean and sustainable living in the country.
The delegates included 14 representatives from African nations and four from Asian countries, namely Bangladesh, Nepal, Sri Lanka, and Bhutan.
The foreign visitors were given a tour of PMC’s waste management projects at the Fursungi and Devachi Uruli waste depots, where they were briefed on various aspects of the city’s waste management system.
This included the use of biomining and composting techniques to treat waste, as well as the implementation of tree plantation projects at the waste depots. The representatives praised the composting project through biomining and the waste treatment plant.
As part of their two-day visit to Pune, the representatives also visited some houses to learn about the production of organic fertilizers using wet and dry waste. They were shown how the waste is collected, transported to the processing plant, and then processed using the biomining technique. Municipal officials said that the visitors appreciated the efforts being made by PMC to manage waste effectively, from collection to processing.
India has been working to improve its waste management system under the Swachh Bharat Mission, which was launched in 2014. The mission aims to eliminate open defecation and promote cleanliness and hygiene in the country, with a focus on sustainable waste management.
The visit by the foreign delegates to PMC is seen as a positive development, as it highlights the progress being made in this area and could lead to further collaboration and exchange of ideas between different countries.
