Delhi Satya Niketan Building Collapse: Death Toll Rises To 7, Rescue Operations Continue
New Delhi, 7th September 2026: The death toll in the Satya Niketan building collapse in southwest Delhi has risen to seven, while 12 people have been rescued so far, according to the latest update from Delhi Police. Rescue and search operations continued on Monday as teams worked through the debris of the collapsed structure.
The incident took place on Sunday afternoon when a five-storey building being used as a boys’ paying guest accommodation collapsed in Satya Niketan, near Delhi University’s South Campus. The building, known as ‘Hostel Daze’, was being used to accommodate students.
Multiple agencies, including the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF), Delhi Fire Service and Delhi Police, were deployed for the rescue operation. Around 85% of the debris had been cleared by Monday morning, according to Delhi minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa. However, officials said it was still not possible to confirm whether anyone else remained trapped under the rubble.
The collapse has raised questions over the condition of the building and the work reportedly being carried out inside it. Preliminary inquiries are examining whether construction or renovation work in the basement and water accumulation may have weakened the structure. Officials have not yet established a definitive cause for the collapse.
The building was around 40 years old. Questions have also emerged over alterations to the structure and whether load-bearing walls may have been disturbed. These remain part of the investigation and have not been established as the confirmed cause of the collapse.
The Delhi Police has registered an FIR against the alleged owner, identified as Hariram, and others. Police have formed 10 teams to locate and apprehend him, with raids being conducted across Delhi, Haryana and Uttar Pradesh. A Look Out Circular has also been issued against the alleged owner.
The incident has also prompted immediate action around neighbouring structures. The Municipal Corporation of Delhi ordered the adjoining property to be vacated after it was found to be in a dangerous condition and subsequently ordered its demolition. Residents of the adjoining building were shifted to a nearby community hall.
The MCD has separately ordered that illegal constructions of more than four floors be sealed, with action promised against officials found responsible for allowing such structures to remain.
The collapse has renewed concerns over the safety of older buildings being used as paying guest accommodations in densely populated parts of Delhi. Satya Niketan has developed over the years from a low-rise residential settlement into a major student accommodation hub, with several properties being adapted or expanded to meet demand for housing near educational institutions.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences to the families of those who died and wished those injured a speedy recovery, while Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta visited the site and reviewed the rescue operation. The Chief Minister has also ordered the suspension of MCD officials like the Deputy Commissioner, Executive Engineer, Superintendent Engineer, Assistant Engineer, and Junior Engineer.
Rescue teams are continuing to clear the remaining debris while authorities investigate the circumstances surrounding the collapse.
