Dengue Alert: Pune Reports 110 Suspected Cases and First Dengue-Related Death Reported
Pune, 19th July 2023: Pune faces its first Dengue outbreak as the monsoon season commences, with 110 suspected cases and 12 confirmed Dengue infections reported by mid-July. Tragically, the city recorded its first Dengue-related death this month. To combat the situation, the Pune Municipal Corporation has taken proactive measures, sending notices to 547 individuals in the city linked to Dengue mosquito breeding. These individuals have collectively been fined Rs. 1,23,900 for their negligence.
Dr. Suryakant Devkar, Assistant Health Officer of the Pune Municipal Corporation, disclosed that no Dengue-related deaths were registered between April and June. However, there were 27 suspected Dengue cases in May, which increased to 54 in June. As of July, the number has escalated to 110 suspected cases, with 12 of them confirmed as Dengue-positive.
The first Dengue-related death was officially documented by the municipal health department. Furthermore, a single case of Chikungunya has been detected, and a total of three Chikungunya cases have been reported this year.
To address the root causes of the outbreak, the health department has undertaken rigorous inspections of societies, hotels, and other establishments to check for proper water storage practices that prevent mosquito breeding. Violators failing to adhere to these guidelines are facing penalties, as emphasized by Dr. Devkar.
The health department encourages citizens to change the water in coolers and refrigerators weekly and avoid stagnant water on terraces and premises to curb mosquito breeding. To ensure consistent monitoring and raise awareness about Dengue, independent inspection teams have been set up at regional offices, and insecticides are being sprayed at various locations.
