Discounted Fares For AC Seating: Indian Railways Implements Fare Reduction Scheme
New Delhi, 10th July 2023: The Indian Railways has announced a reduction in fares for AC chair cars and executive classes across all trains, including Vande Bharat, Anubhuti, and Vistadome coaches. The extent of the fare reduction, up to 25 per cent, will vary based on the occupancy levels of the trains and the fares of competitive modes of transport. This decision was outlined in an order issued by the Railway Board.
The discounted fares will apply to AC chair cars and executive classes in trains that have AC seating accommodation, including Anubhuti and Vistadome coaches, as stated in the Railway Board order. The discount, up to a maximum of 25 per cent, will be applied to the basic fare. Additional charges such as reservation fees, super fast surcharges, and GST will be levied separately.
Based on the occupancy levels, the discount can be extended to one or more classes.
To optimize the utilization of accommodation, the rail ministry has delegated the authority to the principal chief commercial managers of railway zones to introduce discounted fare schemes for trains with AC seating.
According to the order, trains with occupancy levels below 50 per cent, either end-to-end or in specified legs/sections, during the last 30 days will be considered for the discounted fares. The quantum of discount will be determined based on the fares of competitive modes of transport. Discounts can be applied to the first and/or last leg of the journey, intermediate sections, or the entire journey if the occupancy is less than 50 per cent in the respective leg/section.
The implementation of the discount scheme will take effect immediately. Unfortunately, passengers who have already made ticket reservations will not qualify for fare reimbursements. In cases where flexi fare is applicable and the occupancy is low, the scheme may initially be withdrawn as a measure to increase occupancy. It is important to note that this scheme will not apply to special trains introduced for holidays or festivals.
