Dr. Dinesh Amalnerkar Elected as the President of Maharashtra Academy of Sciences
Pune, 15th December 2025: In a significant development for Maharashtra’s scientific community, renowned materials scientist Dr Dinesh Amalnerkar, former Director General of the Centre for Materials for Electronics Technology (CMET), has been elected as the new President of the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences (MASc).
Established in 1976, the Maharashtra Academy of Sciences is a learned society dedicated to promoting science and examining scientific and technological issues impacting the state. The academy has previously been led by eminent scientists such as Dr Homi Sethna, Dr B M Udgaonkar, Dr R A Mashelkar, Dr B D Kulkarni, and Prof G D Yadav. Distinguished figures including Dr Jayant Narlikar, Dr Anil Kakodkar, and Dr Vijay Bhatkar are Fellows of the academy.
MASc has a strong representation of scientists from leading institutions across Maharashtra, including BARC, TIFR, IIT Bombay, NCL, NCCS, CMET, IUCAA, IISER, defence research organisations, universities, and industrial research centres.
While handing over charge, former President Prof G D Yadav said that Dr Amalnerkar, a recognised expert in nanotechnology and functional electronic materials with strong academic and research linkages in South Korea and Japan, is expected to leverage his vast experience to further the academy’s mission of advancing science and technology for the state’s socio-economic development.
