Dr. Krishanpal Karmodiya from IISER Pune selected as an EMBO Global Investigator
Pune, 13th December 2024: Dr. Krishanpal Karmodiya, a faculty member in the Department of Biology at IISER Pune, is among those selected for the prestigious EMBO Global Investigator Network of the European Molecular Biology Association (EMBO).
The EMBO Global Investigator Network supports young group leaders in Chile, India, Singapore and Taiwan, and, in a pilot project, in Africa. A total of eleven life scientists from these countries were included as the newest members of the EMBO Global Investigator Network in this round of selection.
This recognition highlights Dr. Karmodiya’s significant contributions to understanding drug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum, the parasite responsible for malaria. His group’s research has focused on the cellular and genetic determinants of resistance to artemisinin, a critical drug in malaria treatment.
Dr. Karmodiya’s research on key chromatin regulators implicated in drug resistance is well-cited and has been received with great interest by the scientific community. His research group has also contributed to the understanding of genetic markers associated with artemisinin resistance by analysing over 2,000 genomes. In a recent study, they conducted large-scale genome-sequencing of isolates from Midnapur in India, where the first definitive report of artemisinin resistance was reported earlier, and identified novel mutations linked to resistance mechanisms.
Membership in the EMBO Global Investigator Network offers support to early- and mid-career scientists for a period of four years. The programme provides resources for networking, collaboration, leadership development, and professional training. Dr. Karmodiya’s inclusion in this global network will further enable him to advance his research and help in the career development of his group members.
