Dr. Satish Thigale Passes Away at 80: A Legacy of Education, Sports, and Research

Pune, 20th February 2025: Dr. Satish Shripad Thigale passed away today at the age of 80 due to age-related ailments.
Dr. Thigale was a founding member of Symbiosis and served as a professor and head of the Department of Geology at Pune University for nearly 35 years. He also held the position of honorary director of the Sports Department at Symbiosis for many years. During his tenure, he actively promoted sports by organizing six-a-side competitions, Maharashtra state-level ranking table tennis tournaments, and training school students in badminton, table tennis, skating, chess, and other sports.
He played a key role in establishing the Symbiosis Krida Bhushan Award, which continues to recognize sports organizers contributing to the promotion of sports.
One of Dr. Thigale’s most significant contributions was his extensive research on landslides. For over 50 years, he traveled to various villages across Maharashtra, studying landslide-prone areas and raising awareness among citizens and government authorities about the risks. His work led to the publication of hundreds of articles and books on the subject.
Several students earned their Ph.D. degrees under his guidance, benefiting from his vast knowledge and mentorship.
Dr. Thigale’s contributions to academia, sports, and environmental awareness will always be remembered. A heartfelt tribute to a truly versatile scholar and mentor.
