Rekha Gupta Becomes Delhi’s Fourth Female CM, Takes Oath At Ramlila Maidan

New Delhi, 20th February 2025: Rekha Gupta, the newly elected MLA from Shalimar Bagh, was sworn in as the Chief Minister of Delhi on Thursday at Ramlila Maidan. The oath-taking ceremony was attended by Prime Minister Narendra Modi, members of his Cabinet, and chief ministers from various National Democratic Alliance (NDA)-ruled states.
Alongside Gupta, several leaders, including Parvesh Verma, Ashish Sood, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravinder Indraj Singh, Kapil Mishra, and Pankaj Kumar Singh, also took their oaths as ministers. Delhi Lieutenant Governor V K Saxena administered the oath of office to Gupta and her council of ministers.
The BJP ended 11 days of speculation on Wednesday by finalizing its choice for the chief ministerial position after reclaiming power in Delhi for the first time in over 26 years. This victory marked the end of a decade-long rule by the Arvind Kejriwal-led Aam Aadmi Party (AAP).
At 50, Gupta becomes Delhi’s fourth female chief minister, following Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress), and Atishi (AAP). She is also the fourth BJP leader to hold the position, after Madan Lal Khurana, Sahib Singh Verma, and Sushma Swaraj.
The decision to appoint Gupta as the Leader of the House in the Delhi Assembly was announced on Wednesday by senior BJP leader Ravi Shankar Prasad at a party legislature meeting. Following this, she met with LG V K Saxena and formally staked her claim to form the government.
After being selected as Chief Minister, Gupta expressed her commitment to the development of Delhi, emphasizing honesty and dedication in her approach.
“I sincerely thank the party leadership for entrusting me with this responsibility. Their trust and support have given me renewed energy and motivation. I pledge to serve Delhi with honesty, integrity, and full dedication to ensure the welfare, empowerment, and progress of every citizen. I am committed to taking Delhi to greater heights,” she shared in a post on X.
In the recently concluded Delhi elections, the BJP secured a majority by winning 48 out of 70 seats, while AAP managed 22. The Congress, however, failed to secure a single seat.
