DRI Pune Intercepts 5.67 Kg Gold Worth Rs 3.6 Crore Smuggling Attempt at Pune International Airport

Viman Nagar, 24th January 2024: The Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) Pune Regional Unit successfully thwarted a gold smuggling attempt at Pune International Airport. Acting on specific intelligence, DRI Pune officers were stationed at the airport’s arrival hall in anticipation of the arrival of a lady passenger and her accomplice from Dubai on Spice Jet Flight No. SG-152 on 24th January (Wednesday).

The identified lady passenger was found in possession of a white-colored belt containing approximately 5482.39 grams of gold paste. Additionally, she carried a pouch with approximately 1432.28 grams of gold paste. Authorities also apprehended her associate, who was traveling with her.

The combined gold, weighing 5.67 kilograms and valued at approximately Rs 3.66 crore, was extracted from the seized gold paste, which initially weighed 6.9 kilograms. The operation was carried out under the Customs Act, 1962.

Both individuals involved in the smuggling attempt have been arrested and subsequently remanded to judicial custody. The rigorous efforts of DRI Pune have successfully curtailed this illicit activity, ensuring the interception and seizure of a significant quantity of smuggled gold.

The investigation is ongoing as authorities work to uncover additional details and potential links in this smuggling operation.
