Pune 18th Oct 20023: The Mumbai Police have arrested drug racketeer Lalit Patil who had escaped the custody during his jail term at the Yerawada Central Jail when he was admitted to the Ward number 16 of Sassoon General Hospital for treatment. Patil was on the run for over two weeks after he fled the hospital, a day after his name appeared in a case related to a drug smuggling reported outside the hospital.
According to sources, Patil was arrested by the Mumbai Police from Chennai on Tuesday. Mumbai Police were investigating the drug haul case after a drug manufacturing factory linked to Lalit Patil was busted. Earlier, the Pune Police had arrested Lalit’s brother Bhushan Patil.
Patil travelled to Gujarat, Karnataka and Chennai in the last 15 days and the police could only trace him after one of the suspects detained by police came in contact with him through call and he was traced to Chennai. The Mumbai Police team followed the inputs and he was arrested. It may be noted that the incident sparked controversy and allegations were raised over the treatment being provided to the jailed prisoners at hospital. It was also alleged that many accused had also paid money to the concerned officials to extend their stay in hospital and accused like Patil were also running their illegal business from the ward number 16 of the Sassoon General Hospital.
