Pune: Prisoners From Yerwada Central Jail Clinch Gold Medal For India At International Online Chess Competition
Yerawada 18th Oct 2023: A team of prisoners from Yerwada Central Jail has won a gold medal in the international online chess competition organised for the prisoners from across the world. The nine members team of prisoners defeated EL Salvador in the final match to win the gold medal. A total of 118 teams of prisoners from 50 different countries participated in the competition held online between October 11 and 16.
The Yerawada prisoner’s team that was representing India earlier ranked first in Asia in the competition to qualify for the final. The team was qualified to represent India at international competition after it ranked first in the national competition held between different teams of prisoners from various jails in India last month. The national competition ‘Parivartan-Prison to Pride to Prison’ was organised by the Indian Oil Corporation Limited in coordination with the jail authorities.
Started in 2019 by the International Chess Federation, the chess competition for prisoners is the biggest-ever chess event organised among the correctional facilities. The inmates at Yerwada Jail were provided training before the competition under the unique initiative ‘Parivartan’ and chess grandmasters including Abhijeet Kunte and Soumya Swaminathan were also associated with the training teams. Such initiatives, according to officials, help prisoners to return to the mainstream and become a good citizen by forgetting their past background.
