Eight Dead, Several Injured as Truck Hits Workers on Samruddhi Highway in Jalna

Jalna, 2nd April: Eight people were killed and several others sustained injuries after a speeding truck ploughed into a group of people along the Samruddhi Highway in Jalna district on Wednesday, police said.

According to officials, the victims were part of a group of workers standing along a service lane when the truck veered off course and hit them from behind. The impact left multiple people critically injured, some of whom later succumbed.

Jalna Superintendent of Police Ajay Kumar Bansal said the injured were rushed to nearby hospitals for treatment. “The workers had gathered by the roadside after finishing their work when the truck suddenly changed lanes and rammed into them,” he said.

Police have detained the driver of the vehicle and registered a case of culpable homicide. Further legal proceedings are underway, officials added.

Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis expressed condolences over the loss of lives and said the state government stands with the affected families. He also announced financial assistance of Rs 5 lakh each for the kin of those who died in the accident.

Senior district officials, including the Collector and police authorities, reached the spot soon after the incident and are overseeing relief and rescue operations. The condition of some of the injured remains critical, officials said.
