Her initiative focuses on imparting crucial knowledge and practices surrounding pelvic and menstrual health to school-going girls and boys through a meticulously designed education module. Dr. Mitra’s efforts are particularly aimed at English medium schools in the Pune district, where she conducts comprehensive sessions on these vital health topics.

Since 2013, Dr. Mitra has been actively engaged in health education and promotion, with a more focused program commencing in 2021. The significance of her work is underscored by the growing prevalence of pelvic-related issues among women in India, including incontinence and prolapse. Through research and patient interviews, Dr. Mitra identified the urgent need for early intervention and education to instill lifestyle and behavioral changes.

The implementation of Dr. Mitra’s program is as practical as it is impactful. Schools are approached, permissions secured, and the education module delivered over a period of six weeks. Currently, the initiative primarily targets schools under the Pune Municipal Corporation, with plans to expand to Zilla Parishad schools and those in semi-urban and rural areas.

Looking ahead, Dr. Mitra envisions scaling her initiative on a national level, transcending language barriers by translating the education module into vernacular languages. Her ambitious goal is to reach every corner of the country within the next five years, contingent upon sufficient support from state and central governments.

The recognition bestowed upon Dr. Suroshree Mitra at the Punekar News Women Achievers Award is not just a celebration of her individual achievements but also a testament to the transformative impact of her tireless efforts in promoting pelvic and menstrual health among India’s youth. Dr. Mitra’s vision embodies empowerment through education, paving the way for healthier and more informed generations to come.
