Narayangaon, 13th April 2024: The Pune rural police have nabbed two individuals, including a woman, in connection with an incident where a man lost his life after being struck by a car, purportedly due to objections over an alleged immoral relationship. The incident took place outside the Ayodhya Hotel on the Pune-Nashik highway on Friday.

Police officials, led by Police Sub-Inspector Sanil Dhanve, disclosed that CCTV footage of the incident has been obtained. The accused have been booked under section 302 of the Indian Penal Code for murder.

The primary suspect, identified as Abhijit Sonwane (28), hailing from Degore, Junnar, and the co-accused woman, Jeba Irfan Fakir (32), are now in police custody. Assistant Police Inspector Mahadev Shelar is spearheading further investigations into the case.

According to police, the victim, Sabir Mohammad Shafi Byapari (45), a resident of Panasumba Peth, Junnar, was allegedly in a one-sided romantic affection for Jeba, who was married and residing in close proximity to him. Jeba, employed at a company in Kandali Colony, would commute daily from Junnar to Kandli for work. Abhijit, employed as an agricultural land enumerator in the taluka, reportedly met Jeba during these journeys, leading to a romantic liaison between them.

When Sabir learnt about their friendship, there was an argument between him and Abhijit. The situation escalated when Abhijit visited Jeba’s residence for Eid celebration, prompting a confrontation between Sabir and Abhijit. On Friday, Jeba left for Kandli by bus, with Sabir trailing her. Jeba allegedly alerted Abhijit of Sabir’s pursuit via phone call. Around 2 pm, when Sabir was standing near Ayodhya Hotel, Abhijit ran over him with a car.

This incident has triggered widespread outrage, with members of the Muslim community staging protests at the Narayangaon police station. Demands for swift justice echoed as authorities promptly apprehended the suspects from Pimpalwandi. Both Abhijit Sonwane and Jeba Irfan Fakir have purportedly confessed to their involvement in the crime, leading to their arrest on charges of murder.
