Pune, 20th June 2025: In a major relief for vehicle owners across Maharashtra, the state transport department has announced a final extension for the mandatory installation of High-Security Registration Plates (HSRP) on vehicles registered before April 2019. The new deadline is August 15, 2025, offering vehicle owners an additional six weeks to comply with the regulation.

Transport officials clarified that this will be the last extension, and no further relaxations will be granted.

“There will be no more deadline extensions,” said State Transport Commissioner Vivek Bhimanwar. “Any vehicle registered before April 2019 and found without HSRP after August 15 will face penalties as per the Motor Vehicles Act.”

Slow Progress in Pune
Data from the Pune Regional Transport Office (RTO) indicates a significant backlog. Out of approximately 25 lakh eligible vehicles, only around 2.6 lakh have been fitted with HSRPs so far.

Transport officials attribute the delay to logistical challenges and limited appointment slots at authorized HSRP fitment centers. Many vehicle owners have reported difficulties in getting appointments through the official portal.

Action Against Non-Compliant Vehicle Owners
A senior official from the transport department advised citizens to at least initiate the process before the deadline to avoid fines. “Vehicle owners should immediately book an HSRP appointment online and retain the payment receipt as proof,” the official said. “Those who fail to even schedule an appointment will face strict action once the deadline lapses.”

What You Should Do
Book an appointment for HSRP installation via the official HSRP portal.
Keep a copy of the payment receipt or booking confirmation as proof of intent.
Ensure fitment is completed by August 15 to avoid legal action or penalties.
The department has emphasized that this extension is not an invitation to delay, but a final window to comply with safety norms that have been in place for several years.
