Pune – After much hue and cry over bail to a woman driver who mowed down five persons in Baner, which resulted in death of a mother and her 3 year old daughter, Pune city police have now added stringent section 304 of the Indian Penal Code.

Now Chatushrungi police station which is investigating the case, will again seek order from the court to re-arrest Sujata Shroff as section 304 is punishable with imprisonment from 10 years till life term. She is the wife of a builder.

The incident occurred at around 2.40 pm on Monday in front of Vasudha Society on Baner Road near Baner Phata.

The victims were standing on the median blocks, waiting to cross the road, when the car driven by Shroff ran over the median and hit them. The Chatushrungi police said the woman lost control over the vehicle, leading to the mishap.

All five victims are residents of Baner gaothan. They were taken to a nearby private hospital where three-year-old Isha Vishwakarma was declared dead. Her mother Pooja (26) also succumbed to severe injuries. Vishwakarma’s neighbour Nisha Shaikh (27), her son Sajid (4) and Nisha’s brother Shahjad (22) were also badly injured.

Initially police had registered an FIR for offences under sections 304(a) (culpable homicide not amounting to murder) and 279 ( rash and negligent driving) of the Indian Penal Code. As these are bailable offences, she was granted bail on the same day when produced before court on Tuesday.

But now section 304 have been added, which is non-bailable.
