Fitness in Summer: Early Morning vs Late Evening Workouts
By Anne Thomas
Pune, 10th May 2026: Fitness is not merely a routine to be followed, but a way of life pursued with passion that contributes to overall physical, mental, and emotional well-being. It is not something that needs to be started only at a young age; one can begin the journey towards fitness at any stage of life. I began my own fitness journey at the age of 40 — an age often referred to as a ‘midlife crisis’, and today, at 60+, fitness continues to be one of my greatest passions.
In today’s fast-paced world, maintaining a consistent fitness routine is essential for sustaining energy levels, improving immunity, and enhancing overall quality of life. However, during the summer months, many people tend to become irregular in their workouts, often lacking motivation due to the intense heat. While it is true that high temperatures and humidity can make physical activity uncomfortable, using weather as an excuse to avoid exercise can gradually lead to a sedentary lifestyle, resulting in lethargy, low energy, and mood instability. Fitness, therefore, must be viewed as a non-negotiable part of one’s lifestyle, irrespective of seasonal challenges.
The key to sustaining fitness during summer lies not only in what one does, but also in when one chooses to do it. Timing plays an important role in the effectiveness, comfort, and safety of a workout. Among the most practical options are early morning and late evening sessions, each offering distinct advantages depending on individual preferences and physiological responses.
Early morning workouts are widely considered the most suitable choice during summers . From my own experience as a fitness trainer, I often conduct group workout batches outdoors during the early morning hours. The atmosphere is much more calmer, cooler, and refreshing, which has also encouraged greater participation and enthusiasm among members.
The primary reason for the popularity of morning workouts is the relatively cooler environment, which minimizes the risk of dehydration, heat exhaustion, and fatigue. Exercising in the early hours allows individuals to take advantage of fresh air and lower pollution levels, thereby enhancing breathing efficiency and endurance. This is particularly beneficial for activities such as jogging, yoga, cycling, and functional training, where sustained effort and oxygen intake play a significant role.
In addition to environmental benefits, early morning exercise positively influences the body’s metabolic rhythm. Starting the day with physical activity can boost metabolism, improve concentration, and set on and active mode for the rest of the day. It also promotes discipline and consistency, as workouts completed in the morning are less likely to be interrupted by calls, messages, or other such distractions.
For individuals aiming for weight management or overall health improvement, morning sessions offer a structured and reliable routine. A morning exercise routine encourages individuals to become early risers, enabling them to start the day with energy and enthusiasm. It also helps in establishing a healthy sleep pattern, as individuals tend to go to bed earlier. As the saying goes, ‘early to bed and early to rise makes a person wise and healthy. However, early morning exercise may not be ideal for everyone.
Following a night’s rest, the body tends to be less flexible, thereby increasing the need of a proper warm-up to prevent injuries. Furthermore, some may find it challenging to wake up early or may experience reduced strength levels during the initial phase of their workout. Despite these limitations, morning workouts remain highly effective, particularly for those seeking comfort and consistency in hot weather conditions.

Late evening workouts, on the other hand, present a different set of advantages. By this time, the body is fully awake, muscles are more flexible, and coordination is at its peak. This allows us to perform exercises with greater strength, intensity, and efficiency. As a result, evening sessions are particularly beneficial for resistance training, high-intensity workouts, and group fitness activities where higher energy output is required.
Another important benefit of evening workouts is their role in stress relief. After a long and demanding day, engaging in physical activity can help release tension, improve mood, and provide a sense of relaxation. For many, evening workouts serve as a mental reset and a way to destress and enter a more relaxed mode. And for those who are not naturally inclined to wake up early, evening workouts offer a more comfortable and sustainable option.
Evening workouts also have an advantage in terms of lifestyle management. This time of day, after work, is your free time, during which you may be tempted to indulge in unnecessary snacking, eating out, socialising or other unhealthy habits. Engaging in a workout during this period not only promotes physical health but also helps in avoiding such temptations, thereby supporting better dietary discipline and overall lifestyle control.
Despite these benefits, late evening workouts during summer may pose certain challenges. The heat and pollution from the day can still make outdoor exercise uncomfortable, especially in urban settings. Indoor gyms, while temperature-controlled, may experience higher footfall during evening hours, which can affect convenience and focus. Also, engaging in intense workouts too close to bedtime may interfere with sleep quality, particularly if the body remains stimulated after exercise.
A comparison between early morning and late evening workouts reveals that both options have their own strengths and limitations. Ultimately, the choice between morning and evening workouts should be based on individual energy levels, preferences, and daily routines. Some people naturally feel more active and motivated in the morning, while others find their peak energy levels in the evening. For early risers, morning workouts can be highly beneficial in maintaining consistency and comfort during the summer. For those who are not inclined towards early mornings and feel more energetic later in the day, evening workouts can be equally effective.
However, motivation also depends greatly on the environment and company one finds at the gym. There was a time when I felt most energetic in the evenings and considered morning workouts almost like a punishment. Today, the situation is completely reversed. The positive company, motivation, and energy I now experience during morning sessions have completely changed my outlook towards early workouts. This shows the fact that consistency in fitness is often influenced not only by timing, but also by the atmosphere and encouragement surrounding us.
To sum up, I would say the effectiveness of any workout routine depends less on the time of day and more on consistency, motivation, and the willingness to love yourself and give yourself that one hour of the day to make fitness a part of one’s lifestyle.
