Fix Water Leaks or Lose Connection: PMC Warns Housing Societies in Pune
Pune, 14th April 2025: In a bid to tackle water wastage during one of the city’s harshest summers in recent years, the Pune Municipal Corporation (PMC) has directed all residential housing societies to inspect and repair their internal water supply systems.
According to civic officials, the move aims to curb unnecessary losses caused by leaks, faulty plumbing, and neglected infrastructure. Notices are being sent to housing societies citywide, urging them to conduct internal audits of their pipelines, taps, and water tanks.
“All societies have been asked to promptly identify and fix leaks in their premises,” said Nandkishor Jagtap, chief of PMC’s water supply department. “We are requesting residents to take this seriously and ensure their water systems are in proper condition.”
PMC officials also warned that water wastage due to neglected or damaged infrastructure — such as broken taps, rusted pipes, or overflowing and unhygienic storage tanks — may invite penal action if not addressed.
In addition, the civic body has appealed to those using unauthorised water connections to come forward and regularise their supply. However, officials say the public response so far has been underwhelming.
“Only a small number of property owners have taken steps to pay the required penalties and legalise their water connections,” a senior PMC official told Punekar News on condition of anonymity. “We are now considering stricter measures like imposing fines or disconnecting such connections altogether.”
