Former President Pratibha Patil’s husband Devisingh Shekhawat passes away in Pune

Pune, 24th February 2023: Devisingh Shekhawat, husband of former President Pratibha Patil, passed away at the age of 89 in Pune today. He was admitted to KEM Hospital two days ago due to cardiac arrest. His last rites will be held in Pune today at 6 pm.

The first mayor of Amravati city, Shekhawat was a member of the Indian National Congress.

Devisingh Ransingh Shekhawat, a former lecturer in chemistry, married Pratibha Patil on July 7, 1965. The couple has a daughter and a son, Raosaheb Shekhawat, who is also a politician. Shekhawat earned a PhD from the University of Mumbai in 1972 and was a former mayor of Amravati from 1991 to 1992. He served as principal of a college operated by his wife’s Vidya Bharati Shikshan Sanstha foundation. Shekhawat is a member of the Indian National Congress party and an agriculturalist. He was elected as a Member of Legislative Assembly from the Amravati constituency in the Maharashtra state legislature for the period 1985-1990, but lost his deposit in the 1995 contest. Various accusations surfaced against Shekhawat and Patil following her nomination as President of India.
