From Colonial-Era Junction to Modern Transit Hub: Lonand Station Transformed Under Amrit Bharat Scheme

Lonand, 19th May 2025: Lonand Junction, a historically significant railway station in Maharashtra’s Satara district, is set to be inaugurated on May 22, 2025, following major infrastructural upgrades under the Indian Railways’ Amrit Bharat Station Scheme. The redevelopment project, undertaken at a cost of ₹10.48 crore, marks a significant milestone in the station’s evolution from a colonial-era rail junction to a modernized regional hub.
Established during British colonial rule as part of the Central Railway’s network expansion, Lonand Junction played a crucial role in connecting Pune, Satara, and Miraj. Its strategic location made it a key transit point for both passengers and freight, particularly in the transportation of agricultural goods like sugarcane from western Maharashtra.
The station gradually grew in significance, achieving the Non-Suburban Group-6 (NSG-6) classification. Over the years, the addition of a double electric-line track enhanced its capacity, further integrating rural and semi-urban areas with major urban centers.
Recent developments include a comprehensive overhaul of station infrastructure. Enhancements comprise a new entrance hall and gate, portico construction, a compound wall with developed circulation areas, a parking facility, renovated booking office and lobby, a waiting room on Platform 1, and upgraded platform surfaces. Seating and illumination facilities have also been installed to improve passenger comfort.
Lonand Station Master H.R. Ramteke informed that the station currently serves over 400 commuters daily, a number expected to rise post-inauguration. “Local residents are frequently seen enjoying the new station premises, treating it like a tourist spot,” he added.
Kiran, a local shop owner and former corporate employee, highlighted the project’s impact on regional employment mobility. “With this development, local youth can now commute more easily to Pune, Kolhapur, Satara, and Miraj for job opportunities,” he said.
Serving a population of 20,000–30,000 in Lonand and nearby villages such as Nira, Valha, and Wathar, the station continues to be a crucial link for farmers, students, and small businesses. Currently, 16 trains operate daily through Lonand, including prominent services like the Koyna Express, Maharashtra Express, and Miraj Bikaner Superfast Express.
