Matheran, 19th May 2025: Matheran, located in Maharashtra’s Raigad district, is not only known for its scenic beauty but also holds the distinction of being the only automobile-free hill station in Asia. The charming destination, popular among tourists, strictly prohibits vehicles, making it a unique and eco-friendly retreat.

Matheran’s allure lies in its pleasant climate, lush greenery, towering trees, red-soil pathways, and the iconic toy train. The absence of vehicles ensures that the air remains fresh and unpolluted, making it a refreshing escape for nature lovers.

Before entering Matheran, vehicles must halt at Dasturi Naka, the last point accessible by motorized transport. From there, tourists can explore the hill station by walking or by horse riding, as no vehicles are allowed beyond this point.

The toy train is a major attraction, providing a picturesque and leisurely journey to Matheran. For those who prefer not to take the train, taxis are available up to Dasturi Naka, where vehicles must be parked before proceeding further.

Matheran’s automobile-free policy plays a crucial role in preserving its natural beauty and protecting its delicate ecosystem. With no metal-paved roads, the entire hill station is connected by red-soil pathways, maintaining the rustic charm while minimizing environmental impact.

By enforcing strict vehicle restrictions, Matheran has managed to maintain its pristine natural environment, setting an exemplary model for other tourist destinations aiming to balance tourism and ecological conservation.
