From Confusion to Confidence: How PCMC’s Free Technical Diploma is Transforming Futures of Young Women
Pimpri, 18th July 2025: Two years ago, Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) partnered with Symbiosis Skills and Professional University (SSPU), Kiwale, to launch an ambitious skill development programme offering completely free residential diploma courses to young women from economically weaker backgrounds. Today, this initiative is not only transforming the lives of its students but also creating a quiet revolution—one where girls are stepping into manufacturing shop floors and automation labs with confidence, skill, and purpose.
Divya Dukre, a current student pursuing a Diploma in Manufacturing Excellence, recalls how financial constraints almost ended her academic journey. “I found out about this programme on Symbiosis’ website. Since it was completely free, I could continue my education without burdening my father,” she says. “Before joining, I was shy and under-confident. Now, I’ve found my voice, and I’m sure I will be financially independent soon.”
The programme offers two industry-relevant diplomas: Diploma in Manufacturing Excellence (DME) for students who have completed Class 10 and Diploma in Manufacturing Automation (DMA) for those who have passed Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry, and Math (PCM). Admission is merit-based, through a written test and interview, and the annual income of applicants’ families must be below Rs 5 lakh. All selected candidates receive free training, accommodation, food, uniforms, and safety gear.
What sets the initiative apart is its German dual-mode training model, which prioritizes hands-on learning. Most students spend a significant portion of their time on practicals and on-the-job training. Last year’s batch is already interning in companies around Chakan and Pimpri Chinchwad—and some have secured permanent placements.
“I came here with no mechanical knowledge,” shares Huda Hamid Khan, now employed with a manufacturing firm in Chakan. “But through this course, I’ve gained both theoretical and hands-on experience. I even worked on real-life manufacturing projects. Today, I dream of becoming a professional who brings innovation and sustainability to the sector.”
Over 100 girls trained so far
In 2023, a total of 51 girls were enrolled—48 in DME and 3 in DMA. In 2024, the intake rose to 52, with 38 girls in DME and 14 in DMA. This brings the current number of trainees to 103. For the 2025 batch, PCMC aims to admit 60 girls in a new upgraded course — Diploma in Advanced Manufacturing Excellence (DAME). The new course will span three years (two years residential and one-year industry internship from home). Students who complete this course will also be eligible for direct second-year admission to BTech degree programmes.
PCMC Commissioner Shekhar Singh highlighted the broader impact of the programme:
“This initiative is about much more than skill training. It enables young women with potential to dream bigger, become self-reliant, and eventually emerge as leaders in fields traditionally dominated by men.”
Additional Commissioner Pradip Jambhale Patil emphasized the Corporation’s commitment:
“PCMC’s goal is to take skill education to the last mile. By partnering with Symbiosis, we ensure that deserving girls in our jurisdiction receive quality training and viable employment opportunities. This initiative aligns with our larger vision of inclusive growth.”
Mamata Shinde, Deputy Commissioner and Head of the Social Development Department, said,
“Many of these girls are the first in their families to step out of their homes for education and work. PCMC is proud to provide them a platform where they can grow with dignity, confidence, and technical skills. We are committed to expanding such opportunities further.”
Dr Swati Mujumdar, Pro-Chancellor, Symbiosis Skill University, shared, “We believe an empowered girl can empower society. Thanks to PCMC’s support, we’ve been able to provide a fully sponsored diploma to girls from Pimpri Chinchwad. This is helping build a skilled female workforce in the manufacturing and automotive sectors.”
Many students say this course has been life-changing.
Ashwini Gaikwad, who comes from a low-income family, shares, “The support from teachers and access to facilities has given me confidence that I can build a better future. I’m grateful to PCMC for supporting girls like me.”
Another student, Shruti Madane, reflects on what the opportunity represents:
“This course didn’t just teach me technical skills—it taught me confidence. I now believe I can thrive in a male-dominated industry. It’s not just about a job, it’s about changing mindsets and creating space for women in India’s manufacturing story.”
