From Cycle to City Landmark: Pune Misal House Celebrates 27 Years of Spicy Legacy

Erandwane, 6th June 2025: Pune, long celebrated for its academic and cultural vibrancy, has also earned a spot on the culinary map, thanks in part to iconic eateries like Pune Misal House in Erandwane. What began 27 years ago on a humble bicycle has today evolved into a buzzing destination for misal lovers, drawing crowds daily.
Founded in 1998 by the grandfather of current owner Aba Kale, the misal venture had its roots in a small village in Shirur taluka, where the family was originally involved in farming and dairy work. To supplement income, Kale’s grandfather began selling tea and snacks like shev-chivda on a bicycle. Gradually, misal — a spicy Maharashtrian delicacy — became part of the menu and took center stage.
After moving to Pune, the family established Pune Misal House, which is now run by the third generation. Over the years, the brand has not only maintained consistency but also innovated. By traveling across Maharashtra — from Kolhapur to Nashik — and studying local flavor profiles, they developed two signature gravies: a medium-spicy Pune-style rassa and a fiery Kolhapuri version.
Two signature misal platters define the menu:
Classic Misal Thali includes farsan, onions, lemon, sprouted matki, pav, and both gravies.
Bajirao Misal Thali adds taak (buttermilk) and ghee for a rich twist.
What sets Pune Misal House apart is not just the food but the cultural experience it offers. Over the years, it has attracted food enthusiasts, celebrities, and even foreign tourists. At just ₹90, it delivers a spicy punch with legacy — an unbeatable combination.
“This journey from a bicycle to becoming a culinary landmark is something we’re proud of,” said Aba Kale, beaming with pride. “Misal is not just food — it’s a part of Pune’s soul.”
And indeed, for anyone craving authentic, tongue-tingling misal in Pune, this is the place to be.
