Giryarohan Mahasangh Organizes Innovatives Activities To Celebrate International Mountain Day

Pune/ Mumbai, December 9, 2020: Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangh (AMGM) has organized statewide programs to celebrate the International Mountain Day on December 11. The celebrations consist of Mountain Pooja, Webinars and Seminars on mountains, online drawing and essay competitions, podcasts and several more events. More than 25 district associations of AMGM, renowned adventure and mountaineering clubs are participating in the celebrations. The primary motive of the International Mountain Day celebrations is to inculcate, educate and promote mountaineering culture among the citizens. AMGM is formally associated with United Nations to celebrate the day. All the details and information about AMGM’s celebrations will be updated on the UN’s website. 

Umesh Zirpe, President, Akhil Maharashtra Giryarohan Mahasangh, elaborated the importance of the day and explained the activities planned by AMGM. He said, “Since 2003, United Nations has been celebrating the day to create awareness about the importance of mountains to life, to highlight the opportunities and constraints in mountain development and to build alliances that will bring positive change to mountain people and environments around the world. Every year UN designates the theme to celebrate the day. This year the UN has planned to celebrate mountains with Mountain Biodiversity theme to celebrate the rich biodiversity as well as the threat it faces. Interestingly, India- Maharashtra has a vast and unique biodiverse region mostly surrounded by the mountains. This International Mountain Day, several associated organisations, clubs have organized innovative activities to celebrate mountains and its biodiversity. In addition, Mountain Pooja at native levels has also been planned on December 11.
