Pune, December 9, 2020: The long standing demand by the Airport Authority of India (AAI) has eventually got the green signal in principal from Defence Ministry. The ministry in principal approved to hand-over 2.5 acres of Air Force land to be used by AAI.

This will pave way for the extension of the Pune Airport besides resolving the issue of air transportation. A meeting took place in New Delhi which was attended by Pune MP Girish Bapat and Defence ministry secretary Ajay Kumar.

There is no place for the cargo centre at the Airport. This limits the cargo movement. Bapat said, “the ministry agreed upon the land in exchange of a land at Chandigrah Airport which is used for flying the soldiers placed at Leh, Ladakh.”

Meanwhile, Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) supremo Sharad Pawar also met Defence Minister Rajnath Singh, Defence secretary & Civil Aviation secretary in New Delhi to discuss the proposed International Airport at Purandar.

“The Maharashtra government has proposed to set up a new International Airport in order to reduce the heavy air traffic load at Pune International Airport. I insisted on the need to expedite the work of the airport”, Pawar tweeted.
