Pune, December 29, 2020: While several countries have started vaccinating against the novel Coronavirus (COVID-19), it seems that Indians will no longer have to wait.

Adar Poonawalla, CEO of Serum Institute of India, broke this good news and informed that the use of COVID vaccine, Covishield, will be allowed starting from January 2021.

Poonawalla said, “We have submitted the data of vaccine tests in the UK including India to the concerned Central Drug Controller. We respect the rules of the Central Government. We are serious about its effectiveness and safety before the vaccine hits the market. Serum and AstraZeneca do not want to take any risks in developing this Covishield vaccine. We will have to wait a few more days for that. We cannot compromise on the quality of the vaccine. The vaccine could be licensed in the UK in the next two to three days or in January. After that, vaccines from India may also be allowed. Therefore, there will be ‘good news’ in the new year.”
