Good News for Landowners: Maharashtra Govt to Speed Up Land Surveys with GPS Technology
Pune, 20th July 2026: Land survey applications in Maharashtra, which currently take two to three months to process, are expected to be cleared much faster after the state government approved the procurement of 300 GPS-based rover devices for the Land Records (Bhumi Abhilekh) Department. The initiative aims to reduce the backlog of land measurement cases through faster and more accurate digital surveys under the newly introduced e-Measurement Version 2.0 system.
The state government has sanctioned ₹33 crore for the purchase of 300 GPS rover devices and 100 post-processing software licences. The equipment will be deployed across the state’s 355 Land Records offices to strengthen survey operations and expedite the disposal of pending applications.
As part of the modernisation initiative, the Land Records Department, in collaboration with the Survey of India, has established 77 Continuously Operating Reference Stations (CORS) across Maharashtra. The CORS network enables survey teams to capture highly accurate GPS coordinates in as little as 30 seconds, significantly reducing the time required for field measurements.
The rover devices receive correction signals from the CORS network and display real-time GPS coordinates on tablets, allowing surveyors to conduct land measurements with greater speed and accuracy. Survey maps, along with latitude and longitude coordinates, will be generated in digital format and made available online.
Officials said the new technology is expected to accelerate the disposal of both regular and urgent land survey applications while enhancing the accuracy, transparency and efficiency of the survey process.
In Pune district, the rover devices will be allocated on priority to talukas with the highest number of pending land measurement cases. According to officials from the Land Records Department, the initiative is expected to significantly reduce the backlog and ensure the timely disposal of survey applications across the state.
