New Delhi, 6th June 2025: India is bidding farewell to the decades-old Postal Index Number (PIN) system as the Department of Posts introduces a new digital addressing solution — DigiPIN.

Designed to revolutionize how addresses are recorded and accessed, DigiPIN is set to replace the traditional six-digit PIN codes with a 10-digit geocoded identifier that pinpoints exact locations, right down to a four-metre radius.

The move is aimed at addressing long-standing challenges posed by the conventional PIN system, which often represents broad geographical areas, leading to logistical inefficiencies and confusion in last-mile delivery.

What is DigiPIN?
DigiPIN is a unique digital address code that accurately maps your home, business, or any location using advanced geospatial technology. Unlike the conventional PIN code that broadly categorizes regions, a DigiPIN provides precise geolocation, allowing for improved accuracy in delivery services, emergency response, and navigation.

Developed by India Post in collaboration with IIT Hyderabad, the National Remote Sensing Centre (NRSC), and ISRO, this geocoded address system is part of a wider effort to digitize India’s postal and location-based infrastructure.

Speaking about the initiative, a senior official from India Post said, “DigiPIN ensures more reliable delivery not only for postal services but also for e-commerce, emergency services like ambulances and fire brigades, and location-based authentication.”

Key Benefits of DigiPIN
Accurate Deliveries: Ensures letters, parcels, and packages are sent to the correct doorstep.
Emergency Support: Enables quicker access for ambulances and disaster relief teams by accurately pinpointing locations.
Rural Reach: Especially useful for remote and rural areas where physical addresses are inconsistent or unavailable.
E-commerce Boost: Promises greater efficiency in last-mile delivery for online retailers and logistics companies.

How to Get Your DigiPIN
To generate your DigiPIN, visit the official government portal: 🔗 https://dac.indiapost.gov.in/mydigipin/home
Once there, simply:
Click on your location on the digital map.
The website will generate a unique 10-digit DigiPIN for your address.
This code can be saved, used offline, and shared as your new digital address.
India Post assures that data privacy has been maintained, and the system can also function without internet access after generation, making it suitable for areas with low connectivity.

What Sets DigiPIN Apart?
Unlike other global digital address systems like Google Plus Codes or What3Words, DigiPIN is government-backed, location-authenticated, and integrable with existing postal infrastructure. More importantly, it is built for Indian terrains and logistics, keeping local challenges in mind.

As India transitions into a digitally governed infrastructure, DigiPIN could become a vital tool not just for postal services but also for governance, disaster management, and citizen services.

The End of an Era, and a Leap Forward
The traditional PIN code system, introduced in 1972, has served the country for over five decades. With DigiPIN, India takes a significant leap toward precision mapping and digital transformation.

Whether you’re in a congested urban lane or a far-flung village, your exact location now has a digital identity — one that could reshape how we receive services, navigate, and live.
