Green Theatre Festival in Pune to Mark World Environment Day with Eco-Themed Plays and Expert Talks

Pune, 20th May 2025: As the world prepares to celebrate World Environment Day on June 5, Pune will host a unique blend of theatre, awareness, and environmental activism through the Green Theatre Festival—a collaborative initiative by Aarambh Foundation and Natakachi Shala.
Scheduled for June 5, 2025, from 6 PM to 10 PM at The Box, Erandwane, this one-of-a-kind event promises to engage the audience through powerful performances and thought-provoking discussions focused on the urgent environmental challenges of our time.
A Creative Approach to Environmental Awareness
The festival will feature three compelling plays centered on ecological themes, all directed by Ashwini Ambike, the visionary behind Natakachi Shala. Around 35 students from the school will perform, using drama as a tool to educate and inspire action.
“Today’s students are tomorrow’s responsible citizens. They must not only understand the environmental crisis but also become part of the solution,” said Ambike. “Theatre is a powerful medium to communicate these messages in a memorable and emotional way. That’s how the Green Theatre Festival was born.”
Adding gravitas to the event will be the special appearance of noted film and theatre personality Kiran Yadnyopavit, known for his contributions as a writer, director, and actor.
Backed by Environmental Action
Supporting this creative initiative is the Aarambh Foundation, known for its hands-on work in ecological preservation. Founders Umesh Pawar, Chaitanya Joshi, and co-director Manish Khadilkar have played an instrumental role in making this festival a reality.
The foundation is particularly recognized for its “Shelter for Sparrow” campaign, which focuses on reviving the population of house sparrows in urban areas by installing eco-friendly bird shelters in homes, schools, and societies. Their mission also includes tree plantation drives, educational sessions, and environmental documentaries that inspire citizens to reconnect with nature.
Panel Discussion with Environmental Experts
Following the theatre performances, the evening will conclude with a panel discussion featuring eminent environmentalists:
Dr. Satish Khade, known as the “Water Hero”
Abhishek Kavitkar, President of Tree Public Foundation and Bird Republic
Suhas Abhyankar, Wildlife Expert
These speakers will engage the audience in meaningful conversations about water conservation, urban biodiversity, and sustainable living.
An Invitation to Pune’s Citizens
“This is not just a theatre event; it’s a call to action,” said Umesh Pawar, inviting Pune residents to attend. “We hope this festival will spark conversations, encourage eco-conscious behavior, and build a community that values and protects nature.”
With a mix of entertainment, education, and environmental responsibility, the Green Theatre Festival is set to become a meaningful addition to Pune’s World Environment Day celebrations.
